Upper Walking Pathways at Athabasca Falls

Upper Walking Pathways at Athabasca Falls

The Upper Walking Pathways at Athabasca Falls form a network of short, accessible trails that guide visitors along the upper banks of the Athabasca River before it plunges into the canyon below. These paved and gravel paths begin directly from the parking lot and lead to a series of fenced viewing platforms, stone steps, and interpretive signs, offering varied perspectives of the waterfall and the surrounding rock formations. One of the highlights is the footbridge crossing the gorge, where visitors can look straight down into the churning water as it slices through layers of ancient quartzite. In spring, meltwater dramatically increases the river's flow, intensifying the sights and sounds, with mist rising from the canyon and dampening the trail edges. Along the upper walkways, you’ll pass through small forested sections, encounter views of Mount Kerkeslin, and trace the path of water that has sculpted deep potholes and curved walls into the bedrock over thousands of years. The trails are mostly level, with a few gentle staircases, making them suitable for most visitors while still offering striking access to the raw power of the falls. Hiking Athabasca Falls
