Pothole Views with Lower Water Levels

Pothole Views with Lower Water Levels

In early spring, before the full surge of glacial melt begins, pothole views at Athabasca Falls become especially vivid and accessible due to lower water levels. With less volume rushing through the gorge, many of the rock formations usually hidden beneath the spray or current are temporarily revealed. Along the mid and lower sections of the falls, the sculpted potholes-smooth, circular depressions formed by centuries of swirling sediment-are more visible, often dry or only partially filled. Their rounded shapes stand out sharply against the layered limestone, creating striking contrasts of shadow, texture, and light.

Visitors walking along the fenced canyon paths and lookout points are treated to a rare glimpse of the geological artistry hidden during peak flow. These views are particularly pronounced at the mid-falls overlook, where you can peer directly into rock basins carved out like natural bowls. The clarity of the scene also offers insight into the water’s erosive power and how seemingly calm, swirling currents have drilled deep into the canyon floor over thousands of years. This quieter, early-season moment at the falls highlights the subtler-but no less fascinating-side of Athabasca’s ever-changing landscape. Hiking Athabasca Falls
