Tranquil Lower Athabasca Falls

Tranquil Lower Athabasca Falls

The lower section of Athabasca Falls offers a tranquil contrast to the thunderous cascade above. After crossing the footbridge near the main falls, a well-marked trail descends through a narrow canyon passage beneath Highway 93A. This path, once an ancient riverbed, features curving rock walls and leads to a significant geological feature—a large pothole carved by centuries of swirling water.

Continuing on, the trail splits: one direction leads to the rocky shoreline of the Athabasca River, while the other ascends to an elevated viewpoint above the canyon's end. From this vantage point, visitors can observe the river as it emerges from the gorge into a broader valley, offering a serene perspective of the landscape.

This lower trail segment is relatively short, with some steps and gentle elevation changes, making it accessible for most visitors. It's an excellent addition to the Athabasca Falls experience, providing insights into the area's geological history and the river's enduring power. Hiking Athabasca Falls
